style="font-size:15px;letter-spacing:0.544px;">据《燄口饿鬼经》记载，昔日阿难于林中习定，见观音菩萨度受苦鬼道众生所示现之鬼王，形容枯槁，面貌丑恶，头发散乱，爪尖长利，腹大如山，喉细如针，面上喷火，阿难骇而问其故，鬼王告以其前生贪心悭吝，故死后堕入饿鬼道中，变是身形，长年受难，备受诸苦。饿鬼父复谓阿难三日后亦当命尽，堕饿鬼道。阿难大惊，急至佛前哀求救度，佛乃为其演说燄口经及施食法，若众生能施饮食予恒河沙数饿鬼及诸仙等，非但不落此道，反而延年益受，诸鬼神常来拥护，遇事吉祥。
