leaf="">“盂兰”梵语，翻译为“解倒悬”，是极苦的意思。所谓“倒悬”是指三恶道中（地狱、饿鬼、畜生道）的痛苦，就像人被倒挂一样难受。</span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 20px;outline: 0px;"><span leaf="">“盆”是盛食物的容器，就是说：用这盆器盛着各种珍贵百味美食，恭敬奉献佛僧，承仗三宝不可思议福田之力以解救其“倒悬”之痛苦。所以，“盂兰盆会”也就是为解救先亡倒悬之苦，而盛设种种供养，奉施三宝之法会。</span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0px;outline: 0px;overflow-wrap: break-word leaf="">《盂兰盆经》中讲，有一次，目犍连尊者在七月间结夏安居打坐时，突然想起生身的母亲；因为母亲在世间时贪、嗔、痴具足，他非常担心，不知道母亲往生后到底会落在何处？于是尊者进入定中，看到饿鬼道中的众生都是：圆又大的肚子、细又长的脖子、干如柴枝般的手脚。每个都在哀嚎、饥饿难耐，令人惨不忍睹。当他看得十分不忍时，忽然看到日日夜夜思念的人——他的母亲。</span></p><p leaf="">母亲也正在饱受饥饿的煎熬，目犍连尊者看了内心非常痛苦。他在佛陀的弟子中号称神通第一，于是立刻运用神通，变出一钵饭、一壶水，恭恭敬敬地送到母亲面前。母亲十分欢喜，她忍着颤抖和痛楚，将食物拿到嘴边，可是饭与水才一到嘴边，她的口中就吐出一团大火，瞬息间水干了，饭也变成了焦炭。</span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0px;outline: leaf="">目犍连尊者看到了这种情景，非常痛心，也觉得万分无奈，尽管他的神通广大，但是母亲的业障让他无能为力。因此带着万分的失望从定中醒来，立即去请求佛陀给他力量，教他如何救度自己的母亲。他的一番孝心令佛陀感动，佛陀说：“要救你的母亲，光凭你的神通是不够的，因为你的母亲业障太重，必须靠许多有修行且已证果的僧众，在七月十五日当天，将清净的福业累积在一起，用心力一起回向来帮助她，唯有这股力量才能转她的业。</span></p><p
